Sukhwan Yoon is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). He is an environmental microbiologist and engineer whose research focuses on microbial nitrogen and carbon cycling, with particular emphasis on nitrous oxide reduction, denitrification, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), and aerobic methanotrophy in engineered processes and natural ecosystems. His work integrates microbial physiology and multi-omics with reactor- and field-scale experiments to link microbial functions to ecosystem- and process-level dynamics. Through this work, he advances the mechanistic understanding of environmentally important microbial processes and informs the development of sustainable technologies for greenhouse gas mitigation, soil and water quality management, and resource recovery. Dr. Yoon is an alumnus of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (Y-KAST) and currently serves as an Associate Editor of Environmental Science & Technology and an Editorial Board Member of The ISME Journal.
