Dr Stephanie Neville

The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, Victoria, Australia

Stephanie Neville was awarded her PhD in molecular microbiology from the University of Adelaide in 2016. Her PhD investigated how the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae scavenges essential micronutrients, such as metal ions, from the human host. After relocating to the University of Melbourne in 2018, she has progressed through a series of competitive fellowships, including an NHMRC Early Career Fellowship, the Passe & Williams Memorial Fellowship, and, most recently, the Doherty Accelerator Fellowship. Stephanie's research investigates the chemical biology of the host-pneumococcal interaction, with a particular focus on the modulation of metal ions by the human immune system to both starve and intoxicate invading bacteria. Recently, this work has been leveraged for novel antimicrobial development, leading to multiple patents for metal-based therapeutics that restore antibiotic efficacy.
