Richard Jones

Laboratory Manager of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program

Richard trained as a scientist in a Sydney hospital for 7 years before moving into research with the CSIRO Food Research Division investigating the effect of various food additives on the gut microflora and developing an early bacterial identification system using HPLC. He returned to clinical microbiology in 1983.

In 1996 he was appointed Microbiology laboratory manager at Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology, a position he still holds. His interests include laboratory automation and antimicrobial resistance, and he is focussed on providing a career path and further education for young scientists.

In 2008 he was also appointed the General Manager of the Sonic Healthcare Food and Water Testing laboratories in Australia. In 2009 Richard helped guide the Sonic Healthcare Catalyst program in Africa to establish basic pathology laboratories in remote areas of several disadvantaged countries. In 2023 he was appointed the Director of the Sonic Healthcare Catalyst African Laboratories program.

He has been the Laboratory Manager of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program in Australia since 2017.
