Dr Lucy Furfaro

Dr Lucy Furfaro is an NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellow within the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Western Australia. After completing her PhD in 2019, she was awarded multiple fellowships such as the Raine/Robson Fellow and Forrest Research Foundation Prospect Fellowship to accelerate her research focused on the prevention and treatment of bacterial infections such as Group B Streptococcus, which are a major cause of death and disability during pregnancy and early life.
Dr Furfaro leads the Perinatal Phage team in Perth, Western Australia and is investigating the role of bacteriophages (natural predators of bacteria) across the perinatal period, with the view to develop future targeted therapies against bacterial infection. With a strong discovery to translation focus driving her research, Lucy is passionate about the importance of active science communication and aims to contribute to improve the health of women and newborns.
