Andre Mu
Monash University, Australia
Andre Mu is a Senior Lecturer and Laboratory Head with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Monash University.
He is a microbial ecologist and bioinformatician with over 14 years of training in microbiome sciences across five world-leading institutions spanning three continents, each position supported by prestigious individual research fellowships, including the:
- Endeavour Fellowship (Doherty Institute, Aust.; and UC San Diego, USA),
- NOMIS Foundation Fellowship (Salk Institute, USA), and the
- EMBL-EBI & Sanger Fellowship (Sanger Institute and European Bioinformatics Institute,
UK)
Andre’s research group has a particular interest in the mechanisms that underpin the role of commensal microorganisms in modulating host health outcomes following infection with multi-drug resistant bacteria.
His research to date informs gut microbiome engineering strategies towards translating observations from the bench to human-relevant therapeutic applications. For example, his work on host-microbiome-metabolome responses to phage therapy has contributed to considerations of safety and policy making (USA FDA, and UK House of Commons) towards the biotherapeutic use of lytic phages.
